Some Tips to enhance Wireless Network Signals
Nowadays, more and more family use wireless routers and wireless network card to form a LAN. However, to a network formed by wireless router, its data transmission rate will be greatly influenced by the signal strength. Whenever there is signal not strong enough, data transfer rate is always quite slow and sometimes you cannot get access to internet.
When we use the newly purchased wireless router, it is disappointing to find that the wireless signal coverage is not as good as it claims. Of course, the signal will be subject to objective factors like environmental impact which result in decay. This is unavoidable. While it does not mean that we can do nothing. With the following tips may be of help to minimize signal attenuation as far as possible.
Firstly, put your wireless router at the reasonable and right location.
It is known to us that he wireless signal will be substantially attenuated after crossing barriers especially the metal. And there are a lot of reinforced concrete walls, so when we place the wireless router we should make as little signal as possible through the walls.
The external wall of the study is an ideal location. This will make the living room, study, bedroom receive better wireless signals. Of course, different houses have different structures; we should change a little according to the specific circumstances.
Generally speaking, the wireless card client side possesses the capability of signal strength detection. We can take the laptop to check the signal strength in the house and then choose the best place to locate the router. Besides, we can also install the Network Stumbler software to detect where the signal is strongest.
Secondly, Change the signal channel to reduce interference
We can see the wireless channel options in the wireless router's configuration interface. In general, there are 11 wireless signal channels of 54M followed by channel 1 to channel 11. When there are multiple wireless signals using the same channel, there will be signal interference.
However, many users do not modify the channel when using the router after purchasing. Thus, most of us use the default router configuration channel, it easy to cause signal interference. If the nearby neighbors use the same channel with us, then both wireless signals will be affected.
In this case, we also can use the Network Stumbler software to scan and see what wireless signals are present in the vicinity as well as which channel is using. Then we should modify our own channel to avoid duplication.
In addition, it should be noticed that one channel's signal will interfere with its adjacent two channels. That is to say, channel 6’s signal will affect that of Channel 5 and Channel 7 at the same time. Therefore, when we set the wireless channel we should try to make it two or more channels away from the neighbor’s.
Apart from the above, many working household appliances will also cause electromagnetic interference on wireless networks, so the wireless router should also be placed away from these appliances as far as possible
Thirdly, extend the antenna to enhance signal
The size of the antenna gain will have direct impact on the emission intensity of the signal and reception capabilities. And some routers on the market use a detachable antenna design, so it is the most convenient way to replace a high-gain antenna to enhance the signal. At present, there are lots of gain antennas on the market and the price is pretty cheap. But what should be paid to attention is that you should check whether it is Omni-directional antenna or not. For the directional antennas can only transmit signals in one direction.
In addition, we can also extend the wireless network card’s antenna. It is a pity that most of them are not removable. And replacing them is rather cumbersome. In fact, there are many small objects around us which can serve to strengthen the signal. You can also get more methods of DIY gain antenna from the Internet such as the using milk powder cans, mosquito coils plate, colander, etc. If you are interested, you can give it a try.
