Tips to Help With Upgrading Your Model Train Power Supply
As a model railway builder, there may be various times along your journey that you will have to upgrade your power supply unit. For example, if you have bought a model train set that you are now trying to expand into a larger model railroad layout, one of the problems you may have is that the model train power supply unit that you got in your original set will not be big enough to deal with the extra demands you are now putting on it. This will lead to all kinds of problems, so you will therefore need to upgrade it.
When upgrading your model train power unit there are a number of factors you will need to consider before buying a new one to work out which is going to be best for your specific needs. The first thing is that if you are upgrading because you are expanding you layout, how big do you intend to go? There isn't a lot of point in buying a much larger power pack, if you are only planning on expanding on a relatively small scale. This will just be a waste of money.
You will also need to consider and do calculations for how many trains you will be running on the layout. If your layout size is increasing, you may want to run more trains at the same time than was previously possible due to a lack of track space, so this will of course have an effect the amount of power needed. You may also need to look into upgrading you transformer too, if this isn't supplied as part of your power pack or control unit.
When shopping for a new power pack, it important to have done all of the necessary research before you go the store as this will help to avoid a wasted journey and purchasing the wrong power pack altogether. Although the person in the shop may be help you out, if you are not able to provide them with detailed information on your set up, they will only be able to guess at what's best for you.
An alternative to just buying a larger model train power pack is to just add additional units to the original. This will mean that if something goes wrong, the whole layout won't lose power, but only the particular parts that were powered by that particular unit. This method also helps to avoid draining the single resource as the overall power needed is shared between these. This means when more operations are done at the same time, you are less likely to have problems with responsiveness due to a lack of power.
