Advantages of Active Directories

To find out what ECC RAM means, let us dissect the words ECC and RAM. ECC stand for Error-Correcting Code, which literally means that it corrects codes that are not correctly coded. On the other hand, RAM stands for Random Access Memory, which refers to the memory of the computer, which any random information in that memory can be accessed. Together, codes that are incorrectly coded in the memory storage are corrected. ECC RAM is commonly called ECC memory, and it comes in a form of a chip. These chips are used more in servers, or the main computers, than on client computers.

 

The correction of data is instantaneous, and you would not even be aware of it taking place. Basically, what happens is that when data is stored, the code that represents that data is calculated and stored. For every 64-bit of unit of data, an additional 7 bits are included in the storage. Then, that unit of data is recalculated and compared with the original algorithm. If the results match, it means that there was no error. However, a non-matching result means that there is an error, and the bits are supplied or corrected.

 

There are two types of memory errors, which are hard and soft. Hard memory errors happen when a memory chip is defected, and is problematic as it cannot be fixed. On the other hand, soft memory errors can happen when there are disturbances in the circuit.

 

If either error is not corrected right away, the computer can end up crashing. However, because these chips are used mainly in servers rather than client computers, that main computer will experience the crash, and not the client ones. When this happens, the network will come crashing as well, as the main computer that has crashed served as the server. Even if the client computer is installed with an ECC memory but crashes, it does not affect the other computers.
