Bringing Energy Efficiency to the Data Center
If you take a moment to think of all the servers that you have in your business for various IT needs, and the cost of each of those servers, the price tag probably represents a sizeable chunk of your overall IT expenditures. However, over the life span of those servers, you may be surprised to find out that the total cost of powering and cooling them can exceed their original cost.
As energy prices continue to rise, and companies invest even more into IT, many IT directors are no longer looking at the fixed costs as the largest budget item. Instead, they are also thinking about the long-term variable costs to run those servers. They quickly realize that finding energy efficiency for their data centers or IT operations is as important as deciding what platform in which to run the business on.
Servers are energy hungry beasts; a typical server can consume over 300 watts of power. Then you have to take into account the heat that they are generating, as well as the costs associated with dissipating that heat through cooling systems. With this you can easily be adding another 100 watts of power per server. Technology is now to the point where replacement cycles have been lengthened, so over the typical five year lifespan of a server, you are looking at a system that can consume 400 watts of power, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Multiply that by all the servers in your organization and you may soon realize the staggering amount of power needed to run just the IT side of your business.
Luckily, manufacturers of computers, <a href="http://www.gotomojo.com">HP servers</a> and other IT equipment have seen this trend developing as well, and have introduced new lines of energy efficient servers to help tame the energy beast. Through higher efficiency power supplies, to server designs that minimize heat, there are a number of choices available on the market today.
Technological innovations in how companies use servers is helping drive the energy efficiency push as well. Through the use of cloud computing and virtualized systems, many organizations are abandoning the "one application, one server" mentality of the past. They are now hosting multiple applications on a single server to maximize the utilization of the machine, which in turn, helps keep power costs down.
The shape of the server is changing as well. Tech gurus have witnessed the tower design give way to rack mounts; rack mounts give way to a self-contained chassis; and now blade systems are beginning to pop up in many organizations. A blade can host several different machines at once through the use of slide-in "blades". This helps not only with space, but also with power and resource consumption. A business that may have had to utilize a full rack for eight different servers before, can fit all of those servers into a blade chassis now. This reduces power, cooling and space needs.
As energy costs continue to climb, and businesses continue to seek additional ways to maximize their IT resources. We will no doubt see many more innovations in the energy efficiency of servers. While years ago it was "faster, faster, faster" as the mantra for technological progress, today the chant may very well be "greener, greener, greener!"
