The Different Types Of DDR2 SDRAM

DDR  (double  data  rate)  memory  chips  are  manufactured  by  semiconductor  manufacturers  like  Intel,  Samsung,  AMD  and  Toshiba  who  specialize  in  computer  memory  chips.  DDR2  SDRAM  is  the  one  of  latest  offerings  available  in  the  market.

DDR2  SDRAM  is  the  commonly  used  abbreviation  for  double  data  rate  two  synchronous  dynamic  random  access  memory.  This  type  of  memory  is  called  random  access  memory  or  abbreviated  as  RAM.  RAM  is  mostly  used  in  desktops,  laptops,  mobile  phones  and  palm  devices.  DDR2  SDRAM  is  a  major  improvement  over  its  predecessor  the  DDR2 SDRam.    As  the  internal  clock  rate  is  halved  in  DDR2  SDRAM,  the  external  bus  operation  is  almost  two  times  as  fast  as  that  of  the  DDR  SDRAM.

Memory  storage  in  DDR2  SDRAM  is  performed  through  memory  cells.  These  cells  that  are  triggered  using  a  clock  signal  that  synchronizes  the  cell's  operation  using  a  data  bus  (external).

Although  DDR2  was  introduced  in  2003,  it  failed  due  to  a  slow  response  time  which  had  posed  to  be  a  problem.  This  problem  was  solved  and  the DDR2 SDRamwas  improved  and  re-released.  This  time,  it  was  a  success  in  the  market.

Another  significant  advantage  of  the is  the  power  saver  technology.  This  saving  is  possible  thanks  to  the  improved  technology  through  which  less  voltage  was  required  in  the  operations.  DDR2  SDRAM  does  have  a  disadvantage  though;  they  are  not  backward  compatible  with  their  predecessor's  DIMMS  slot  (Dual  Inline  Memory  Modules).  This  is  due  to  the  difference  in  the  number  of  pins  of  both  DDR2  and  DDR1.  DDR2 SDRam has  a  240  pin  while  DDR1  has  a  184  pin  module.  There  is  also  a  considerable  difference  in  the  positions  and  the  pin  densities.  Due  to  this,  they  cannot  be  used  together  back  to  back.  However,  different  DDR2  DIMMS  can  be  used  together.  However,  combining  a  high  and  low  performing  DDR2  RAM's  may  not  be  a  good  idea  as  it  would  reduce  the  performance  of  the  bus.

The  DDR2  is  succeeded  by  the  DDR2 SDRam (double  data  rate  three  synchronous  dynamic  random  access  memory).  DDR3  SDRAM  has  a  number  of  benefits  over  its  predecessor.

It  can  operate  at  a  higher  buffering  speed  and  hence  can  transfer  data  at  twice  the  normal  speed.  DDR2 SDRam offers  an  expandable  memory  of  16  gigabytes  (GB)  which  was  not  possible  using  DDR2.  The  DDR3  reduces  your  power  consumption  the  credit  of  which  goes  to  the  nanometre  fabrication  technology.  The  DDR3  DIMMS  are  compatible  with  that  of  DDR2  even  though  they  have  an  unequal  number  of  pins.

One  of  the  drawbacks  of  the  DDR2 SDRam is  that  as  it  is  new  in  the  market,  it  is  quite  expensive  at  the  moment.  It  is  advisable  to  wait  for  some  time  for  the  prices  to  come  down,  if  you  are  planning  an  upgrade.  The  DDR3  SDRAM  would  an  ideal  choice  for  you  if  you  are  into  serious  gaming  and  graphics.  If  not,  then  the  DDR2  SDRAM  would  be  the  perfect  cost  effective  alternative.
