Types of SC Connector Dimensions

SC cables are sometimes referred to as Subscriber Connector, Square Connector or Standard Connector cables.  Occasionally, various mnemonics such as Set and Click as well as Stab and Click are thrown in due to the nature of its mode of connection.  The SC connector is therefore a mechanism to terminate the fiber optic cable connection, providing an easy method for attaching and detaching the cables to rack and wall-mounted devices.

 

Most commonly used in data networking and telecommunication environments, these SC cables are used in single mode or multimode.  A single mode SC cable is affixed with a simplex mechanism.  Common SC connector dimensions are based on a 2.5mm ferrule core constructed of a selection of materials which can be zirconium dioxide or stainless alloy.  A cladding zone surrounds and protects the ferrule core.  It is then covered with an epoxy shield and finally a contact layer.  The full dimension up to the most outer layer can be around 13mm to 25mm.  Two simplex SC connectors can be adjoined by a duplex clip to form a duplex SC connector.

 

Some manufacturers produce reinforced SC jumper connectors which are designed to handle fiber optic cable connections comprising 1.6 to 3.0mm fiber optic cords.  Each SC jumper connector has a footprint dimension varying from a minimum of 1.8mm to a maximum of 3.2mm in order to handle the girth of these fiber optic cables.  The length of the connector itself is 58mm with an extra 2mm for its tip.  They also carry SC BTW connectors for 900 micron buffered fiber.  A smaller footprint dimension of 0.9mm to 1.0mm is required to support this smaller cordage.  Production of these types of connectors is in compliance with standards for certain types of media.

 

Since the introduction of LC connectors which are half the SC connector dimensions, there is also production of SC-LC converters which enable LC connectors to mate with an SC adapter.
