A fiber optic media converter converts one network media type (defined by the cable, connector, and bandwidth) into another. This transition allows any business, no matter what its size, to expand their old network with the latest technology. This flexibility allows for a greater efficiency and harmony between departments and individuals.
Does your business still have an old styled copper based Cat6 or Cat5 LAN network, if so then with a media converter you will be able to integrate a fiber optic back bone that provides a much higher amount of bandwidth. With the volume of data that is handled by a modern office increasing exponentially every year it is vital that your network is able to handle the work efficiently and quickly.
A typical media converter is made up of two transceivers, sometimes referred to as media attachment units. These can transmit data to and from each other. Each MAU comes with a different industry standard format connector which is able to join different types of media. The basic concept is that one media type enters and another exits. All connectors are up to date with the latest IEEE standards and protocols.
A fiber optic media converter can be used in any part of the network, for example between routers, servers, switches, and hubs. It is even possible for them to be integrated alongside your workstation. They allow for the configuration of any network to be more flexible. Upgrading at a later date would be much cheaper than if you were to completely throw out your old system and start again.
Media converters that use fibre optics can support far longer cable distances than with the traditional copper cables, as much as two hundred times greater! It is possible to incorporate a Gigabit Ethernet connection with multimode fibers that supports distances up to three thousand metres.
There are now modern converters which are produced in smaller designs. These are meant for the latest types of servers and switches. Small form optic connectors occupy less than half the space of the traditional ST and SC connectors. This means that more ports can be placed in a given device.
A high port density results in a reduction in the overall network costs. With the global economic problems slow to disappear isn't it about time you improved your office's overall productivity rate with the latest network media converters.
