The wireless routers that are available for purchase by consumers vary in terms of the distance that they can send their signals. The stronger the WiFi signal the better the device operates at a greater distance. Its antenna determines the wireless router's range. Wireless routers with 802.11b units have less range compared with the 802.11g. The 802.11g have a better antennae technology.
The 802.11N have even put the 802.11g to shame. The wireless -N routers have more radios designed to maximize its range. Although conditions and environment still plays a great part in how well you get your signal. Tree coverage, thickness of walls, and other obstructions can greatly hamper your ability to receive a signal.
The standard antennae's are manufactured to be Omni-directional. This means they are designed to disperse the signal equally in all directions. They are supposed to provide more uniform coverage for a limited radius.
You can replace these antennae's' in some of the wireless routers manufactured today. You can purchase what is known as an "after market" WiFi antennae's. it is a fact that by switching out the antennae that comes on the model with one that is directional you can increase its range.
Range is only one thing you must consider when contemplating the purchase of a wireless router. Purchasing and installing wireless signal boosters can increase the range or reach of the unit. You may even want to consider upgrading the WiFi client. Both of these will increase the range of your wireless router.
Even if you have a short-range device it may work extremely well in your home depending on how close together you can arrange your wireless devices. If you have thinner walls and you are located close to the signal towers you should be just fine.
