A motherboard is the most important central component of a PC (Personal Computer). It is a printed circuit board (PCB) and is the main connector to the other crucial components of a system. It is also referred to as a main board or system board and is known as the logic board in case of Apple computers. It is casually called the mobo. The components attached to the motherboard that are of significance for the normal running of the PC are the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), the memory, the Central Processing Unit (CPU), the graphics card, sound card, hard drives, disk drives and other external ports and peripherals.
There is not one, but many mobos in the market to choose from. It depends on the system specifications that you choose to make a decision to buy a particular motherboard. Different motherboards supoort different components so it is important to make the right choice in the type of mobo you buy for your system. Two of the largest manufacturers of CPU today are Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel. One cannot buy motherboards that supports both. It can only support either one of them due to the difference in the connectors. Both AMD and Intel have the same caliber of performance when it comes to running similar applications, but there are differences in prices and performance depending on the type you choose.
AMD which is a leading global provider of innovative microprocessor and graphics solutions and when it comes to processor architecture, AMD outsmarts Intel. AMD motherboards are largely viewed as more powerful and accommodating than those produced by Intel. While AMD has, until now focused majorly on the business market, it is looking to offer less complicated, stripped down motherboards with few features to target the home computing and gaming market. It also popular amongst game and graphic designers for its extremely large motherboard designs that can easily incorporate large quantities of RAM and several graphics card at a time. There are instances where it can store more RAM than that the current operating system would allow and can run several graphic cards and 2 CPU’s simultaneously. However, most of the motherboards are designed to fit into the budget of almost all computer manufacturers. They can only be used with AMD CPU’s, a promotional tactic to sell more of their CPU’s. Some times the motherboard price is discounted and might even be sold at a loss to encourage the sale of the AMD CPU which is the actual moneymaker.
When purchasing the motherboard make sure you do a thorough research on the motherboard manufacturing site and read about all its product specifications before you shortlist the one you need.
