You can probably already imagine why it's so important for these crucial drivers to be constantly updated. If your driver is outdated or corrupt, then your computer can't receive the information it needs for sound playback.

It's also absolutely necessary that your sound card functions seamlessly. For desktop computers, sound cards are physical hardware components used to generate audio signals. These work on a standard input/output basis.  Laptops usually utilize "integrated sound processors", which are designed to fit neatly into the structure of a laptop.

Testing, Diagnostics, Experimentation

One of the quickest ways to figure out whether it's your sound drivers or your sound card that's causing the problem is to run a test on your sound card. If you've got Windows 7, try opening up the Control Panel and then the Devices and Printers subcategory.

All of your devices and printers will be listed here, including your sound card. If something's awry, you'll see a yellow exclamation mark next to the device that isn't working. Otherwise, you should see a green check mark next to the functioning devices.

If you see the yellow exclamation mark, try right-clicking on the device's icon and opening up the "Properties" menu. The Properties dialog box will give you more pertinent information regarding the error. You can look under each of the tabs to glean the source of the error.

Often, fixing a sound driver error is as simple as applying a Windows Update. If you haven't updated Windows in a long time, your operating system will not be able to comprehend what's coming from the sound card. As a result, it's good practice to regularly perform a Windows Update. Here's how:

1. Click "Start."
2. Open "Control Panel"
3. Click "System and Security"
4. Click "Windows Update"

Once you accomplish this, your machine will establish a connection with the Windows database. The database will scan your system and recommend any necessary updates that you need to apply. Once it's delivered this information, you'll have the option to download and install updates.

Going Manual or Automatic?

Another option is to manually update drivers. This takes a bit of technical know-how, plus, you need to know where to find these drivers. Normally, you need to navigate to the sound card manufacturer's website. They'll usually prominently display driver downloads somewhere on their website. Or, check within the "Support" or "Downloads" sections of their websites.

The simplest way to fix and update sound drivers, far and away, is to use specialized software that will do the work for you. This software often works way better than Windows Update, for the simple reason that Windows Update is an operating system update, whereas driver update software focuses exclusively on drivers.
