Decoding Barcode applications for smart cameras
What do rental cars, nuclear waste, and cereal all have in common?
They all use barcodes. Hands down there is no better way track movement of any item than with barcodes. Barcodes, generically referred to as Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC), exploded onto the commercial scene with the adoption in supermarkets, but since 1968 has been a major part of industrial landscape. Traditionally Barcode scanners have been laser, but Smart camera-based identification system have made significant progress due to their unparalleled abilities.

Smart cameras can read everything from low contrast direct part marked codes and two dimensional codes, to handwritten addresses. As a result, the smart camera system becomes both identification and validation system for 100% quality control. With higher scan rates, reduced reading pitch required, the overall product throughput can be increase while manual post-processing shortens.
Unlike traditional barcode scanners, the camera is able to capture information on non-standard packages as well as standard-sized shipments, measuring parcels volume and enabling automatic invoicing thus reducing rising labor costs. Although in sheer brawn smart cameras outperform laser barcode scanners, camera based options lack ease of use and come with an expensive price tag.
