LC Adapters Have Many Names
LC adapter comes with many different names, such as LC bulkhead, LC mating sleeves, LC coupler, or LC fiber optic adapter.
LC optic adapters are designed for a large variety of applications so they come at different configurations and types. Before just blindly choose one, you can be better informed with the following knowledge.
Simplex, Duplex or Quad, Which One Should You Use?
LC Adapters come in one port (simplex), two ports (duplex) or four ports (quad).
Duplex adapters are most popular, especially in enterprise networking world.
Quad adapters are more popular in data data centers where space is precious.
Single Mode or Multimode
Based on the fiber cables you are using, you should choose corresponding mode of fiber adapters.
9/125um single mode fiber applications should always select single mode adapters. And APC connectors should choose APC LC optic adapters.
It's a little bit complicated when coming to multimode applications.
Multimode applications can be divided to two categories, the 62.5/125um (OM1), 50/125um (OM2) type and the 10Gig laser optimized 50/125um (OM3) type.
OM1 (62.5um MM) and OM2 (50um MM) applications can just use regular beige colored multimode LC adapters.
Whereas 10Gig 50um OM3 applications should always use aqua colored multimode adapters. This is very important to achieving consistent 10gig laser optimized bandwidth.
SC Footprint or LC Footprint
Duplex and quad adapters come with two kinds of footprints: SC footprint or LC no-flange footprint.
SC footprint duplex LC optical adapters occupy exactly the same footprint as a standard SC adapter
LC footprint has no flange to achieve a even smaller footprint. The only difference between them is the footprint size, they have no difference in terms of optical performance.
Sleeve Materials
LC connectors' ferrules are inserted in the adapter to make the mate. In that process, the adapter's central sleeve plays the most critical role for guaranteeing a low loss mate. Adapter's sleeve comes in two types of material: phosphor bronze or Zirconia (a type of ceramic).
Phosphor bronze is used for multimode adapters only. They do not have the precision for single mode tolerances. However, they are much cheaper than Zirconia sleeves, so they are chosen for multimode applications which don't require very high precision.
Zirconia material is used for single mode LC mating sleeves. They present very small worn out over repeated matings, also they can fulfill the very high demand precision required in single mode fiber systems.
Hybrid Adapters
In addition to standard LC mating sleeves, there are many types of hybrid adapters on the market too. They come as female to female types, or male to female types.
The configurations are diverse, such as LC to SC, LC to MU, etc.
With or Without Shutter
Most common LC optic adapters come with only removable dust caps preinstalled. But some come with shutters. LC adapters with shutters are perfect for patch panels and equipment bulkhead applications. They provide a build in dust cap in addition to laser safety protection.

The need for this patch cord is due to the single-mode launch nature of the -LX or long-wave (1300 nm) transceiver modules used for Gigabit Ethernet. Launching a single-mode laser into the center of a multimode fiber can cause multiple signals to be generated that confuses the receiver at the other end of the fiber. These multiple signals, caused by Differential Mode Delay (DMD) effects, severely limit the cable distance lengths for operating Gigabit Ethernet. A mode conditioning patch cord eliminates these multiple signals by allowing the single-mode launch to be offset away from the center of a multimode fiber.
