The New Samsung Ch@t B3410W – Wifi On The Corby Plus

It's always laudable for mobile phone makers to upgrade their models with new features that were not available at the time they were released.  Nokia had been known to do this affixing an "i" on certain models to take advantage of emergent new messaging technologies.

But the current Samsung Ch@t B3410W updating the B3410 Corby Plus released in October last year seems more like a marketing ploy than anything.  The Ch@t updates the Corby with WiFi, a feature that was available and could easily have been incorporated in the Colby but was obviously left out just so a new model can be released later on with it.

The Corby Plus Simply Rebadged with WiFi

That's right. The Ch@t is the Corby Plus with WiFi, nothing more.  It's the same QWERTY slider with the same look and feel with its TouchWiz 2.0 UI when turned on and a body that measure the same 102.3 x 52.4 x 16.2 mm and weighing identically at 113.7g.  Clearly, the added WiFi chipset makes no difference in its heft.

You get the same 2G phone on the quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) radio.  The added WiFi 802.11b/g benefits your surfing and social networking activities online with its 54 MBps speeds compared with EDGE speeds of 238 Kbps. The SNS apps touted on the Corby finally makes sense with WiFi Speeds that enable live updates to Facebook and media sharing sites like Flickr and widgets on the TouchWiz home screen for instant access to SNS sites.  Local high speed data transfers get served with Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0.

Display technologies, imaging and multimedia likewise remain the same. You get a 2.6-inch LCD TFT QVGA resistive touchscreen with 256k colors and a scratch resistant surface, an outdated 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with QVGA video recording and the same media players and FM stereo receiver with RDS.  You also get the same DNSe sound enhancing options and stereo listening options using its 3.5mm audio jack or wireless Bluetooth A2DP support.

Phone memory is also the same 45 MB with phonebook capacity for up to 1,000 entries.  You also get microSD memory expandability for up to 16 GB.   Talk times are reduced from, 10.6 hours on the Corby Plus to 7.5 hours on the Ch@t from the same 960 mAh Li-Ion battery. WiFi's power requirements could easily account for that.

No Definite Release Timeframe

Unveiled at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Samsung Ch@t B3410W has yet to receive any definite timeframe for release and we can understand this if Samsung wants to play out to the max the Corby's product lifespan and then release the Ch@t to further extend its lifespan.

Well, it's good to hear that it has a product out soon and we can now recommend to markets worldwide to refrain from patronizing the inferior Corby Plus and just wait out for the Ch@t to be released, as it no longer makes sense to go buy a €150 Corby at this time.

If that doesn't force Samsung to release what it should have released in October, then the market is better advised to look elsewhere as there are more affordable and better abled social networking handsets in the market.
