Look at the news on Yahoo and CNET: Opera has launched the final version of its latest browser, Opera 10, featuring an improved interface and new technology to boost the web experience for mobile workers. Cisco Systems is going to offer business a new software client designed to increase the speed of access to remote applications for mobile workers. You can find the frequent appearance of two words: mobile workers. Who is a mobile worker? How to define them? Why these IT giants beat a path to release products for this group of people?

The last group turns out to be the telecommuters. It’s simple to recognize them because they work mostly from home. According to Nathan Clevenger, the Enterprise Editor for Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, there is another sorting scheme. He proposed three categories of mobile workers, i.e. the constantly-mobile workers, the occasionally-mobile workers, and the hybrid-mobile workers. These workers, who are always task-oriented, do their job on the move, such as utility meter readers going from house to house and retail workers filling orders inside a warehouse.
The information–oriented occasionally-mobile workers do not work while moving. They travel between locations and do their work at their destination. Their desktop has been replaced with a laptop so they can carry it around no matter wherever they go. The third group is the hybrid-mobile workers who are comprised of occasionally-mobile workers that need the capability to access information while they’re on the go, rather than waiting until they get to their destination. It’s obvious that the primary tool for location-independent workers is laptop. Although major IT companies launched numerous applications and software, what will occur to mobile workers at the first place?
