History Of Everton FC Shirts
Everton soccer Club started at the St Domingo Methodist Church Sunday School which was opened in May 1870. St Domingo's FC rapidly established a local reputation for themselves, but when they began to recruit footballers from beyond of the parish a variation of name was essential, hence the start of Everton FC in November 1879. Their earliest fixture, against St Peter's took place on December 20th 1879 at Stanley Park, and Everton very proudly won 6-0 in their blue and white striped shirts. In those days players recruited from an alternative lineup could still wear the jersey of his ex- club, so Everton wanted a unified kit, so dyed all their shirts black, adding a two inch wide scarlet sash, which brought them the nickname of The Black Watch, after the military regiment. They didn't settle on their Royal Blue kit until the 1901-02 season.
Everton were invited to become founding members of the football League in 1888, and played in their opening League match in September 1888, winning 2-1. The side moved to the country's initial purpose built football arena at Goodison Park in 1892, after the proprietor of their Anfield site doubled their lease in the aftermath of the Championship win.
Even though Everton had impressive footballers such as Harold Makepeace, Jack Sharp and Harold Hardman, it wasn't until 1906 that the FA Cup ended up at Goodison. The War interrupted soccer but William Ralph Dean was signed and in his initial full season scored 32 league goals in 38 games and in 1927 -28 he scored 60 league goals in 39 matches! Dean became a soccer star and in 1933 Everton won at Wembley for the initial time, winning 3-0 against Manchester City. This competition introduced shirt numbers for the first time with Everton wearing 1-11 and City 12-22. In 1937 Dean moved to Notts County leaving a legacy of 383 goals scored in 433 matches. Luckily waiting in the wings to replace him was Tommy Lawton and he scored 34 goals in 38 matches in the 1938-39 season. Unfortunately for both him and the team, the War prevented his full potential being reached and Lawton never played an alternative League match for Everton, going to Chelsea after the War.
The 1950s were a particularly bad time for the club but Harry Catterick was chosen as manager in 1961, which took Everton back to the top of English soccer, and the lineup won the Championship in the season of 1962-63. Glory was again theirs in 1966 when Everton had a glorious FA Cup run that brought them to the final at Wembley against Sheffield Wednesday. The competition gave Everton player Ray Wilson a , he became the only Englishman to win the FA Cup and the World Cup in the same season.
The 1970s were a miserable in the history of the Club, but the 1980s brought a turn around with the return of Howard Kendall. Everton won the FA Cup for the fourth time and on top of that, European success was finally achieved. The club transfer record was broken in 1988 when Tony Cottee joined from West Ham United for £2.5 million. Everton the campaign at Wembley but the FA Cup Final defeat against Liverpool was secondary to the grief that followed the Hillsborough catastrophe a month previous.
past striker Joe Royle was appointed as manager Walker's replacement and he proved to be the catalyst for the 's restoration which ended in FA Cup success at Wembley. The most unswerving league campaign for years left Everton in a Premiership finishing in 6th place - agonisingly close to a UEFA Cup qualification position.
In November 1998, the Chairman certified the sale of the fans idol, Duncan Ferguson, to Newcastle and the hullabaloo that ensued forced changes at the very highest level.
1999 saw a power struggle at the Club which with lifelong Evertonian, Bill Kenwright, leading a syndicate that was given the go-ahead to assume charge of the football club.
In March 2002 the Board of Directors felt that growth was not being made and decided an alternative change of manager was called for. David Moyes was appointed and the earliest goal under him came within 30 seconds of his initial fixture.
Under Moyes, Everton left the relegation zone at the end of the 2001-02 season. 2002-03 saw the of Wayne Rooney to the , but he unhappily left for Manchester United in 2004. Rooney's saw Everton in a dreadful place, with just 39 points and just 17th in the table.
Everton went full tilt into trying to develop themselves and spent the 2004-05 season in the top four, earning themselves a route into Europe for the earliest time in a decade. 2007-08 again saw them break the transfer fee record by signing Yakubu from Middlesbrough for £11.25m. They reached the semi finals of the Carling Cup, and finished the season in fifth place and booked a return to the Uefa Cup.
