Using A Hydraulic Jack To Raise A Sagging Floor
If you live in an old home you may find that eventually as time passes the floors may begin to sag a bit, causing various issues in the home; from cracking of walls to cracking tiles or unsettled or squeaking laminate or wood floor. You can actually use a hydraulic jack to help you avail the problem of a sagging floor, though keep in mind that this is neither an easy or a very safe job to do. Make sure that you use all precautions and if you are not prepared to take the risk, then DO NOT.
The precautions to keep in mind are to always go slow, spread the load, and always listen to the structure. When it comes to going slow, this is regarding the lifting and doing it in slight increments to ensure that the structure slowly becomes comfortable in the new position. If you take it too fast you will face further cracking of plaster and walls and even cracked structural members. Make sure to spread the load, hydraulic jacks can handle very heavy loads and ensuring you have the load well spread out will keep the structure stable. Lastly, listen to the structure to ensure everything is going smoothly and that you have not lifted too quickly to make the structure unstable.
Firstly you will have to ensure the structure is well put together before you begin lifting. So attaching beans to the floor joints is the first step. Ensure to use a steel plate under the jack. This is to distribute the load and ensure that the jack does not dig into the wood beam. Use crossbeams for further distribution of the load across the floor. If you do not it is very likely the jack will just go right through the floor. Then the tally column is put into place, use steel plates again to ensure that it does not crush the wood fibres.
Use a 1" thick steel plate to place on top of the jack, so it will be between the tally column and the jack. This is to help transfer force from the top of the jack to the large column. Place another tally column alongside the one with the jack and adjust it so it fits tightly. Make sure that the jack is on a stable and secure surface, you do not want it to tip over which can possibly cause bodily injury of things falling from pretty high up.
The process of lifting a floor, house, or building is a repetitive one, so be prepared, it will take some time and plenty of work. You basically lift the jack about 1/8 inch each time while at the same time further tightening the tally column beside it. Use a level and keep lifting until the sagging has been fixed.
Again, this process is rather difficult and a bit dangerous, so do not attempt it if you are unsure. Of course to lift a house you will need a couple more hydraulic jacks and quite a bit of time, but a sagging floor can be fixed with patience and time and of course with the help of your jack.
