Metro Ethernet - Cheaper Prices and Faster Speeds
Metro Ethernet is rapidly growing in popularity among businesses, becoming the "next big thing" in access services. Why?
Factors include:
- Cheaper cost for high-speed service
- Faster access speeds
- Reliability
- Improved and simplified business functions
- Simplicity for operational staff
Consumers versus service providers are the driving force behind Metro Ethernet's surge in popularity. And of the above mentioned factors, cheaper prices and faster access speeds are what consumers are demanding. Of almost equal importance are Metro Ethernet's ability to offer a simplified business continuity as well as having a "disaster recovery is better/easier" option.
The improved features of Metro Ethernet clearly indicate that consumers are willing to pay if they can get the services they need to run their businesses efficiently and effectively. Businesses want to save money, but not at the expense of losing customers because of a sub-par network that can't produce the results they need to satisfy customers.
One surprise in the drive to Metro Ethernet's popularity is its operational simplicity that allows staff to deal with a single protocol. While Ethernet service providers thought this need would be an important factor to users, Ethernet users actually ranked this as the lowest priority after speed, price, and network capabilities.
A non-driver for Metro Ethernet's popularity is avoiding additional protocol conversions which requires a business to manipulate bandwidth via a Metro Ethernet connection, then to another protocol (such as MPLS or ATM) for WAN transport and back to Ethernet. A very small percentage of Ethernet users and Ethernet service providers saw this as an advantage.
With the increased demand of Metro Ethernet by businesses, large and small, Ethernet carriers will continue to be competitive in pricing and access speeds. Businesses will benefit greatly with reduced operational costs and increased productivity among their staff. This can only be a win-win situation between service providers and businesses.
