A Brief Story of Hard Disk Drive
The hard disk drive or HDD plays an important role in the modern era of digital technology. It has a short but very fascinating history. I think there are only few of us know the story behind this hardware. If you want to know a brief story of hard disk drive, then read this article till the end.
Storage capacity of the HDD has grown from mere 5 MB (Mega Bytes) in 1956 on fifty 24-inch disks to more than 1 TB (Tera Bytes) stored on one disk of 31/2 inch diameter. This enormous growth was made possible by developments in diverse fields of knowledge including materials, mechanics, servo control, signal processing and electronics.
HDD was introduced in 1956 as data storage for an IBM accounting computer. On September 13, 1956 the IBM 305 RAMAC is the first computer to be shipped with a hard disk drive that contained 50 24-inch platters and was capable of storing 5 million characters and weighed a ton. The system is as big as two refrigerators. And then, IBM introduces the IBM 1301 disk storage unit June 2, 1961, capable of storing 28 million characters.
The first HDD with 31/2 inch disks came from a company named Rodime in 1983. These drives started as a device on a plug-in expansion board. Then in 1984, Western Digital makes the first Winchester hard drive controller card for the IBM PC/AT--and sets an industry standard. In 1992, Seagate comes out with the first shock-sensing 2.5-inch hard drive.
Start from the beginning of the 21th century, there're so many manufactures pushing the edge of this storage technology. As the result, we can find a 1-inch hard drive that holds 12 GB. Not only that, at the time this article was made, the market had already full of 2 TB hard drives.
