Bug Batteries
You've all heard of the Bird Flu I'm sure. Nasty little bugger, isn't it? But, all viruses are like that.
However, a team of researchers at MIT absolutely love 'em. They can't get enough, and they're using them as your next power source.
So the next time you blow your nose, just think. The green glob of slimy goo is the future of batteries and power.
Genetics is Key
Researchers, Angela Belcher, Yet-Ming Chiang, Paula Hammond, and Mark Hymer, led their team into the world of nanotechnology and viruses.
Using a virus's unique ability to replicate quickly and adaptively, they moved a few of the genes around to harness its ability to construct "nanowires" that will be used in future battery cores.
These nanowires can be used to create small batteries such as dell Inspiron 1520 battery, dell Inspiron 1521 battery, Dell 312-0058 battery with energy capacities found in their larger counterparts, even exceeding current capacities.
The smaller batteries are currently being tested in handheld devises, and they hold great promise in the nanotech market.
"Abalone just happened to be a great example of a natural biomaterial, and one of the reasons that it is such a great material is that it's constructed on the nano-scale," says Prof. Belcher. "So I approached the question, can you use the same principles that nature's evolved and apply it to other materials that nature hasn't had the opportunity to work with yet, like electronic materials and magnetic materials?"
These batteries work on the same principle as the current batteries on the market, but are using newer, more conductive materials.
Right now, they have the ability to create batteries the size of grains of rice for watches, but plan on expanding the size and capacity of time.
The Mythical Electric Car
I say mythical because they have never found a way to make it a practical alternative in the diesel powered economy.
No power.
But with this new type of battery, they will be able to charge the car batteries with enough juice to rival the combustible engine.
Current car batteries don't really do a lot in terms of the function of a car. They definitely can't run the car for more than thirty seconds on their own, so what to do?
These new batteries can store two to three times more power per mass and volume. This almost guarantees them a competitive place in the market as oil prices escalate.
And while we wait for ethanol and hydrogen powered fuel cells to hit the roads, this will be an easy, home bound alternative.
No stations to stop at, just plug it in at home and charge up. Might as well have a damn Staples Easy Button to make the situation complete.
Another great thing is that they are cheaper to construct.
The viruses do almost all the work by themselves.
A New World
With designer viruses, we will be able to not only create new batteries, but even design viruses that can combat HIV and AIDS better than any antibiotic could possibly could.
Viruses that could help cure disabling diseases that are genetic in nature, and even eradicate cancer cells without the use of harmful chemotherapy.
Of course, there will always be the possibility of newer, stronger viruses evolving, but again, you can get hit by a bus if you don't look both ways as you cross the street.
If the proper precautions are taken, as I'm sure they are, we will just have to remember the old adage, "Look before you leap."
With that sage advice, we will redesign the world and the economy into a world of marvels.
