What is the best storage solution for SMBs facing unpredictable data growth—both data protection and right-now access to critical files for users? Leverage existing capital investment in Ethernet. 10Gb Ethernet is fast enough for most SMB needs and supports iSCSI. Staff IT generalists are usually adequate to administer/manage NAS.
2. iSCSI lets NAS filers to mimic SAN-like functionality
iSCSI has low infrastructure or hardware requirements. Often an industry-standard gigabit or 10Gb network card and switch will work. This enables many NAS appliances the capabilities of an iSCSI SAN.

A NAS devices works at the file level, while a SAN operates at the block level. For users requiring access to files, NAS makes sense. NAS gateways are a fairly new type of device that behave much like SAN-attached file server, but with improved performance and more advanced user management. Often a NAS gateway won't have any disk, and instead will use your SAN to supply the data storage while intelligently serving files across your network.
