Useful Information on Data Cabling

Any switching equipment will not be of much use if the cable network that runs voice and data is of poor standard. The voice and data cabling network should be a structured one with high quality installation practices. Each individual or business will have its own specific peculiarities and special requirements. The centres should be protected from fire, flood, humidity, temperature, electrical disturbances and unwanted physical access. Normally, the communication from and to the data centres will be provided, LAN, WAN and CAN/MAN links. Based on the specific requirements of the data centres, the configuration will vary.

 

The data cabling structures should have the following features.

- Provisions for additions, changes and moves

- High bandwidth with the incorporation of future growth factors

- Support for speeds of 10G or higher

- Support for all storage devices like SCSI, fibre channel and NAS

- High quality, scalability and reliability

- Efficient space allocation

- Proper pathways, enclosures and racking

 

Data cabling systems should provide high speed data rates and handle the data stream without strain. The data cabling network provider should use pre-terminated components of high quality to eliminate any risk of system degradation. The system should not fail because of improper field termination. Moreover, the data cabling systems should be cost effective, though the cost should not be the sole deciding factor. The data cabling network provider should ensure that adequate air flow exists in data cabling centres so that the cables do not get overheated.
