Get the right ethernet hard for your data
Hard disk drives, before Ethernet capabilities were introduced, were typically internal hardware and were connected directly to the motherboard by system cables. Later on these disks began to utilize USB 1.0 and were introduced in an external design -that is, Ethernet hard drives could be written on and read from by connecting it to a computing system with an existing internal disk.
The latest innovation for these hardware devices has been utilization of network capability for the disk itself. The Ethernet hard drive allows you connect cat-5 or other similarly sized cabling to the disk assembly and thereby allowing it to be accessible through the network and the internet. There are some of these storage devices that come with wireless network capability, and while that is incredibly useful, it is also the most expensive option for external devices. However, most wireless external drives also come with wired Ethernet connectivity. As the correlation between Ethernet storage capacity and cost of production has shifted drastically in our favor, there are Ethernet hard drives available with four terabytes of storage space for roughly $400.
Even two years ago a similar Ethernet hard drive would cost up near $800. Four terabytes is probably much more space than any average individual really needs, and for what that space really means, $400 really is not very much. Consider that the average one terabyte Ethernet hard disk costs roughly $130 and that is still an incredible amount of storage space for anyone to fill up. Because these Ethernet hard drives have internet connectivity, some manufacturers have installed automatic patching, update, and synching utilities that the companies can use to ensure that your device is maintained from a software standpoint. These sorts of features will cost slightly more, changing a bare bones $100 one terabyte device to $200 with the technical support included.
Digital information and personal data these days is somewhat invaluable, and to lose it because of a design glitch that could have been patched out would be a terrible shame. For small businesses or business offices certain devices that run above the $1000 mark come with added utility. A good example would be Seagates Blackarmor device that not only boasts four terabytes of storage but also comes with a network storage server so that other storage devices can communicate and interchange data with ease. The last thing to consider would be the overall dimensions, as some of these Ethernet hard drives, and namely the cheaper designs, can be quite cumbersome and bulky to fit into your study or office space.
