Quick GSM Overview - Layman Term Answers Of Common GSM Questions
Though it has has been used for some time, not everyone knows the real definition of what GSM is, and what it is doing for us. Let’s see if we can get an answer of this in layman terms that will be rather simple for most to understand. First: What does the GSM acronym stand for? When first created, GSM stood for Groupe Special Mobile, over time however the definition was decided to be altered to mean Global System for Mobile communications. The group who came to the choice to do this, and who also promotes this cellular standard, is known as the GSM Association. Second: What exactly is the purpose behind GSM? It permits mobile phones to make connections with the varied services that we need (phone calls, messaging, internet, and so forth.). Third: How is GSM able to do this? The correct of defining GSM should be as a cellular network, meaning people's phones will attempt to connect to networks by finding cells in the nearby close vicinity. The channels that are in use for speech and signaling are digital instead of analog, which is the reason why the phrase 2G or 2G network came into being. Fourth: Which frequencies does GSM use? GSM primarily has use of four different bands. These four are in the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz frequency range. The 900 and the 1800MHz bands are used by many regions all over the world, whereas the 850MHz and the 1900MHz bands are mostly in use within the US, as well as Canada, and areas in South America. Fifth: What are the major upgrades that GSM has put into effect? General Packet Radio Service (aka GPRS) and Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (aka EDGE) were two releases originally used to beef up GSM services, with an emphasis on its accessing the internet capabilities. The GSM 2G cellular systems in combination with GPRS often are termed 2.5G (since it is a half step up from 2G), but EDGE is an add on to GSM that is considered to be 3G communication technology (and is often referred to as 2.75G because it mixes the previous gen GSM 2G with the more current 3G tech). Sixth: Is the modern 3G capable of being run with the GSM frequencies? It was decided that the 3G network would include GSM (the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz frequencies) combined with 2100MHz UMTS. 3G having been given the ability to use the those GSM frequencies is considered a well thought out idea being as it since it lowers the fees to the network due to using GSM's lower frequency bands. Seventh: What is the GSM network's present state? At present, mobile phones throughout the world are very likely using GSM (with 2 billion users in over 212 countries daily on it). Eighth: What is the reason for the popularity of GSM worldwide? When it originally came out, users flocked to GSM because of its better digital voice quality that it was able to offer combined with it being the 1st service to be capable of having cheaper alternatives than only making calls with a user's phone (the best known being Short Message Service (aka SMS)). Network suppliers decided to use GSM mostly due to equipment being easy to deploy. Ninth: Why does GSM continue to be the world's 1st choice? Ubiquity all over the world for GSM has let network carriers offer roaming services, meaning that a network user will be able to use their phones from GSM carriers in numerous countries. None of the different bands are even near to having the capability of matching the GSM frequency's area of coverage.

GPRS Networks $140 GPRS is a packet based wireless communication service that offers data rates from 9.05 up to 171.2 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. GPRS is based on GSM communications and complements existing services such as circuit switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS). GPRS represents the bridge between 2G and 3G mobile telecommunications and is commonly referred to as 2.5G. Implementation of GPRS requires modification of the existing GSM networks in that GSM is a circuit switched technology while GPRS is packet oriented. GPRS enables packet data (the same as is used by an Ethernet LAN, WAN or the Internet) to be sent to and from a mobile station - e.g. mobile phone, PDA or Laptop. WAP and SMS can also be sent using GPRS and individuals working with GPRS need to learn and understand how the mobile stations, the air interface, network architecture, protocol structures and signalling procedures must be modified. GPRS offers much higher data rates than GSM and can be combined with 3G technologies such as EDGE to give even higher bit-rates. It offers many benefits for customers and network operators: such as volume (rather then time) dependent billing and more efficient use of network resources. Due to the worldwide delay in implementing 3G solutions such as CDMA and UMTS the demand for GPRS is still growing. GPRS Networks : Offers detailed information ranging from standards to practical implementation Answers 'how' and 'why' rather than just simply re-stating GPRS specifications Provides comprehensive coverage in a single volume Essential reading for all telecommunications project managers, field engineers, technical staff in network operator and manufacturing organisations, GPRS application and service developers, Datacoms/IT engineers. The comprehensive coverage also makes this a superb reference for students of computer science, telecommunications and electrical engineering. |

Microcontroller Based GSM/Gprs Projects $151.35 A microcontroller is a singlechip computer. Before the invention of the microcontrollers most intelligent systems were designed using microprocessors. A microprocessor is the processing element of a computer, consisting of an Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) and the Control Unit (CU). A microprocessor on its own is useless and it has to be supported by a large number of peripheral chips, such as memory, inputoutput, timer, interrupt logic and so on. Currently there are many microcontroller chips manufactured by various companies. This book is based on using the highly popular PIn6F887 type microcontroller. GSM/GPRS modems are used in all mobile phones. This book teaches the basic principles of microcontrollers and shows how they can be used in GSM/GPRS based communications projects. All of the examples and the projects in the book are based on the highly popular mikroC language, developed by mikroElektronika. GPRS in Practice $130 Professionals quickly discover that, although the technical specifications for GPRS cover all parts of the engineering functions in detail and depth, they are lacking in one important feature; the conceptual framework within which the specifications sit - GPRS in Practice fills this gap. By beginning with an explanation of why GPRS is necessary and describing the core concept of GPRS operations, the TBF (Temporary Block Flow), a revision section then covers the GSM Air Interface with its Radio, Physical and Logical channels and this progressively leads to the GPRS logical channels - what they do and how they do it. The book then moves on to a brief introduction of the GPRS protocol stack which provides a launch pad for a detailed trip into all the layers of this stack, with detailed diagrams and explanations of each layer integrated into an overall understanding of how the GPRS service operates in practice. Provides descriptions of why procedures are specified and then clearly explains how the specifications work in practice  Provides a layered view of the GPRS protocol and deals in detail with each layer separately  Includes numerous acronyms and abbreviations accompanied by their full meaning An invaluable resource for Mobile network operators, Development and deployment engineers and Handset designers. |
