This device used optical storage where the information gets stored on the disk by making pits on the surface of the CD for storing of the data. Some of the hallmarks of CD's were that they were very tough, resistant to scratching & data degrading and had the capacity to store a huge amount of data.

Nowadays people have started using DVD's and memory sticks for the storing of data because they are small, light, cheap and extremely durable.
