What is a hard disk drive?
The HDD (hard disk drive) is a piece of computer hardware which is used for storing digital information. It is an important part of every PC. The hard disk has every file we have, even after we shut down the computer. The HDD may basically be separated into 2 broad sections - the mechanic one and the electronic one.
The mechanical section of the HDD holds the following: plates, heads, spindle, arm and slider.
The plates are manufactured from glass or from aluminum alloy. They are quite smooth and flat and are manufactured in certain areas with nearly no dust or particles in the air. In order to accomplish the magnetic covering they are wrapped with cobalt alloy. On the plates is packed all the digital info. The plates are being rotated with a really fast pace by the spindle. It functions on 12 volts. Traditional hard disks (their plates) are spinning with a pace of 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute). The plates have countless microscopic sectors which include many even smaller bits of digital info - every bit is 0 or 1. When the information is being read or written the microscopic bits are accessed by the head.
The head is being floated just above the correct bit by an arm and slider which are quite accurate. There are very complex systems that control this process and ensure the accurate spot.
The write/read process is really complicated. The understandable explanation is that the head and all the bits of information are magnets. When the head flyes just on top of a bit, and the information must be altered, the tiny magnet bits change their direction of their magnetic poles.
The electronic part is getting increasingly complex with passing of the years. It includes now a separate CPU, memory and its own software. The electronics of the HDD deal with operating the write/read process, the spinning of the spindle, the movement of the arm and the exact positioning and more. The electronics also hold the hard drive's cache. This is an electronic memory chip of quite fast memory that is used as a buffer between the data on the plates and the memory of the personal computer.
This is pretty much what the hard drive is. There are also portable hard drives (also external hard drive) and they work by the same rules. They just include other interface for doing connection with the personal computer.
