Pc memory is available as ddr2 or ddr3 modules, generally called dual inline memory modules (dimms). Notebook memory comes on small outline dimms (so-dimms), which are much smaller, but otherwise very similar. Intel's core i7 processors support up to three laptop memory channels, meaning you can use three or six memory modules operating in three-channel mode at maximum speed, while most other architectures work with two or four modules in a dual-channel configuration.

This applies to amd's athlon 64 x2 and phenom series, as well as intel's core 2 and pentium families. Multi-channel modes are an effective way to increase memory bandwidth by aggregating multiple 64-bit links.

Pc memory is divided into two broad categories: discrete chips and memory modules. Discrete chips are single units that are installed on your computer's motherboard. Memory modules integrate nine discrete chips into a single, small device that you can add to your motherboard. To add 256k of memory, therefore, you'd need nine 256k-type discrete chips but only one memory module made up of nine 256k-type chips.

Memory modules, found in most 286, 386sx, and 386dx computers, come in two basic configurations, single in-line memory module (simm) and single in-line pin package (sipp). Both simms and sipps consist of nine small ram chips mounted in a row on a small card. Modules are most commonly found in 256k and 1mb sizes, although, as larger applications become more popular, 4mb modules are becoming common.
