Should You Trust Your Video Projects With Digital Video Freeware?
Could the software came with a virus or spyware waiting to be activated after installation. Then there was the stability issue. Freeware programs crashed or stopped functioning for no apparent reason. Freeware was synonymous with bugs.
The other major complaint was the lack of updates and support. Not surprising because most freeware were offered by individuals, hobbyists mostly, with limited resources, in terms of time and money. Then there was case of no proper manual or tutorials to run the programs. Most of the time you have to figure things out for yourself or rely on user forums if available.
All that has changed now. Now some freeware programs can stand alongside powerful mainstream programs which cost hundreds of dollars. The perception is for every big program with the bells, whistles and hefty price tags, there are similar "underdog"; freeware programs that can hold their own.
Even the big media boys are beginning to pay attention to freeware. In an August 2008 issue, PC Magazine ran an article entitled, The Best Free Software. A total of 157 free software tools were reviewed, under the tag line: No fees. No expiration dates. No problems. Sometimes even no downloads. No kidding.
The intro said, "We did the math: If you bought popular apps instead of trying their gratis counter-parts, at the manufacturers' list prices you'd be out $5,183 and change! Why spend money when you can get what you need for nothing? Sometimes, you do get what you don't pay for."
So much for freeware programs in general.
Coming to digital video software the thinking was always only the big boys could provide digital video solutions. But now mainstream software companies like DVDsoft have jumped into the fray and have capitalized on the clout freeware has established among digital video practitioners. They offer freeware versions, fully functional ones, as a means to promote paid versions and brand name.
Some digital video freeware like virtual dub - developed by an individual = has stood the test of time md are now recommended by video professionals.
VLC player has blossomed into one of the most reliable media players. Once installed it is seldom removed from anyone's computer. I'm talking through experience. The persons to whom I have recommended the player now swear by it and have almost forgotten Windows Media Player or Quicktime . The reason: It can play video formats the big boy players sometimes can't.
Then there's the Super multimedia converter software with the tag line - Super does for free what other encoders can't do for money.
It can handle virtually any video file format from AVI, MKV, XVID to 3GP. In my opinion, it's the mother of all video encoders and converters.
I have been exploring digital video freeware for the past eight years and the good ones have given me enough confidence to promote them to others and also provide tutorials and reviews in my website.
If you are new to video editing, don't jump the gun and go out and buy those `complete' programs yet. Seek a freeware alternative and only severe limitations which prevent you from accomplishing your task should drive you to seek payware. Sometimes all you need is cut a video clip or convert one file format to another. You don't have to burn a hole in your pocket buying a top-end software just to accomplish these minor tasks.
I'm not trying to sing praises for digital video freeware. I'm aware of their downside. I've personally encountered some crappy ones which gave me more headaches than help me solve my video problems. But if there's a good one, it really captures your heart and you swear by it.
So, don't give up on digital video freeware yet. By the way, if you suspect a digital video freeware is infected with a virus or spyware, do use the AVG anti-virus program - a freeware of course.
There are very few digital video freeware developers who would want to risk their reputation offering rogue programs. The word gets around fast in forums and blogs and their sites could be listed as unsafe in the search engines.
So, do give digital video freeware a shot before purchasing mainstream digital video software.
