Blue Screen of Death: What is It?
If you were a Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 NT user, you probably would have had a meeting with the infamous blue screen of death. The name is caused by the fact that when the operating system can no longer operate because of a hefty critical systems failure, the safety screen emerges. The BSOD can appear at any time, whether you're in the middle of typing a presentation or playing a computer memory-intensive game.
Why does it appear?
The blue screen of death actually appears to preserve the system. Usually, the screen appears because software or application drivers are not functioning correctly. Unbelievably, even driver manufacturers like Microsoft can still produce faulty application drivers that can drive their own Windows nuts.
Usually, the operating system manufacturers (like Microsoft) remedy these limitations by asking the owner of the operating system to download update packages. These update packages are self-extracting programs that automatically seek out the inadequacies of the drivers or the operating system itself, to prevent things like the blue screen of death from appearing again.
Other causes
Apart from bugs in the system kernel and in the application drivers (updates for the Windows 2000 NT system amount to more than 2 gigabytes), it's also possible that physical flaws in the computer are causing the problem. If you're using a traditional desktop computer (with a tower or mini-tower processing unit), there might be problems there.
The blue screen of death can emerge if your power supply is faulty. Usually, the exhaust fan has already given up (which necessitates the purchase of a new power supply). A motherboard that has already short-circuited can also cause the BSOD. It's easy to check if the motherboard has problems; consult with the user manual and see whether there is a listing for error LED lights. Usually, error LED lights are activated to indicate specific physical problems with the motherboard.
Check your cards
Yet another common source of the BSOD is a faulty video card. Unbelievably, it appears that even reliable video cards tend to go out of commission after more than 5 years of continual use. If you've checked everything and the BSOD still keeps appearing in the middle of things, you might want your video card checked.
Often, old video cards experience an even faultier fan system. The replacement of the fan system often solves the problem for a short while, until something else happens to the video card. If nothing else could be done, it's time to pull out the old one for replacement.
