Comparison between CF Cards and other Portable Storage

The Compact Flash Memory Cards can withstand more physical damage compared to other flimsy designs. They are definitely more durable and rugged as compared to many accidents, impacts and photographic shocks that occur on the field.

The CF cards are being used in man embedded systems such as solid-state drives because of their compatibility with IDE/ATA. It was in the early 2008 that the Compact Flash Memory Cards came out with a built in SATA interface. In fact a number of companies manufacture adapters that permit the CF cards to get connected to IDE, PCI, 44 pin laptop mini IDE and SATA connections. Hence this allows a CF card to act as a solid state drive even in a RAID configuration or in just about any operating system or BIOS.

The CompactFlash memory card doesn't come in with a built in DRM or cryptographic feature such that is prevalent in some of the USB flash drives or other card formats. Due to the lack of such features there is an openness of the standard as the other memory cards with such type of features are subjected to restrictive licensing agreements.

The CF cards are available with higher storage capacities compared to other smaller flash memory cards.

Other types of devices have a mechanical write protection switch which the CompactFlash memory card doesn't have. Exception in this case is the industrial CF-card models (AC60 Turbo/AC73 and AC75 series) that are being made by CoreSolid Storage.

In case of CF cards the slots are designed in such a manner to prevent damage to the device that receives the card that usually happens incases of improper insertions.

The large dimensions of CompactFlash memory cards are a limiting factor with regard to feasibility that takes place in very slim devices. The large card slot takes up vlauable internal space most especially in the point and shoots digital cameras. A CF card can't be easily lost as a tiny MicroSD card.
