COMPARISON: AMD VS. INTEL PROCESSORS
Processor technology has come a long way. New features have been developed like dual-core and multi-core processors. Processor speed and power has continuously increased over the years. In a way, this technology push has been increased by the competition between the two companies Advance Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel Corporation.
Intel has enjoyed a bigger slice of the processor market for a long time but this does not mean that Intel processors are better than AMD's. If you are planning to buy a new computer today, you will probably want to know the differences between the two. The key knows how you will be using your computer. Think whether you will be playing new games with it or use your computer mainly for regular tasks such as internet browsing.
Let us take a look at the differences between AMD and Intel processors.
Cost: Advantage – AMD. AMD processors can be available at a cheaper rate compared to its Intel counterpart. If you are conscious of your budget for getting a new computer you should consider getting an AMD processor. There are very good "low-end" processors from AMD. But the word "low-end" should not fool you. Low-end processors today are pretty fast for normal usage like browsing and when equipped together with a respectable video card, it can rival the speed of more expensive computers.
Speed: Advantage – Intel. Intel has enjoyed better performance for some time. Intel has released powerful processors today like the i3, i5, and i7 processor family. If you really need the extra speed, stick to Intel at least for now. Just remember that you can take advantage of this only if the rest of your system is up to par. You should also get a respectable video card. Otherwise this will bottleneck your computer and your extra processor speed will not matter.
Cost/Performance Ratio: Advantage – AMD. Intel may have the advantage of speed but AMD does better when you consider the speed together with the price. This means that for an AMD processor of the same price with an Intel counterpart, AMD slightly outperform the Intel one.
Power Consumption Efficiency: Advantage – Intel. Intel processors have more efficient cores. They consume less power. Most netbooks uses the Intel Atom. Intel has provided better technology when it comes to power efficiency. This means that for laptops and netbooks, Intel processor uses less battery power. This would translate to longer usage before recharging.
Looking at these differences will help you decide the best processor for you. If you are budget conscious you will probably lean towards AMD. If you are a power user or a gamer, it would be best to stick with Intel. Just make sure you get a good video card, ample memory, and respectable motherboard. At the end the competition between AMD and Intel, can only be benefit us as Consumers. Competition helps in adding an extra push to find new and more efficient technology.
