Building a Garden Shed from Steel Vinyl or Wood! Tips to select Materials

Most garden sheds are build with either steel, vinyl or wood.  The steel shed kits usually come with steel panels and joining rails to be bolted together to complete the four sides and roof while the vinyl kits have panels that slide into each other to form the structure.  The wood kits include all materials, some of which need to be measured and cut before being nailed together.

There are some advantages of using one kind of material rather than another.  The following tips can serve as a guide to make a selection.

1.  Cost;  A steel shed kit is only about one half the cost of vinyl or wood; Therefore, a big saving.  Vinyl and wood kits are about the same price with wood possibly a bit more.  Extras like windows, clear roof panels for additional daytime lighting, and vent panels all add to the cost.

2.  Ease of construction;  Both steel and vinyl kits are quite easy to assemble by following the step by step instructions.  The steel panels and their joining rails are bolted together and the vinyl panels slide into each other to form the walls and roof.  Some of the materials in the wood shed kits may need measuring and cutting before being nailed together which requires a little more skill.

3.  Durability;  The main problem with a steel garden shed is that it is subject to rust and corrosion, and squeaking or sticking doors.  During a heavy rainfall or hail it can be very noisy.  The vinyl garden shed, on the other hand, would be less noisy and require very little maintenance.  It is therefore the most durable of all three materials.  Wood will require occasional painting accept for areas covered with vinyl siding or other covering.

4.  Taste;  A wood garden shed seems to be the choice of many people.  It blends in better in the garden or yard behind the house and adds to the beauty of the property.  A steel shed looks better in an industrial area.  Vinyl, on the other hand, is becoming quite common because of its ease of assembling and durability.       

Since building a garden shed from a wood shed kit requires some measuring and cutting, many people choose to hunt for a good set of plans and build the shed from scratch.  That decision allows you to plan and build it the the way you want it.   There are a huge variety of plans to choose from.
